MyPyramid, which replaces the Food Guide Pyramid introduced in 1992, is part of an overall food guidance system that emphasizes a more individualized approach to improving diet and lifestyle, as represented by the central message, “Steps to a Healthier You.” The new MyPyramid system builds on the positive recognition of the familiar Food Guide Pyramid, with more specific advice for consumers to implement the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

The added emphasis on exercise and nutrient-dense choices, as well as nutrition advice tailored to personal calorie needs, are positive steps towards educating Americans on how to implement a healthful eating plan. The MyPyramid symbol represents the recommended proportion of foods from each food group and focuses on the importance of nutrient-rich food choices in every food group.

Lean pork is recognized as a nutritious choice in the Meat & Beans Group. In fact, the MyPyramid information identifies lean cuts of pork, such as chops and ham. The National Pork Board is developing web-based and written materials to support the USDA Food Guidance System and pork’s role in a healthful lifestyle.
